The Brief:
Gilbert + Tobin has been selected to provide legal support to the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.
The inquiry will be led by The Hon Virginia Bell AC SC, with Richard Lancaster SC appointed senior counsel assisting.
The Federal Government has tapped top Aussie firm Gilbert + Tobin to support the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.
Officials from the Attorney-General’s Department revealed G+T was selected after quotes were sought from firms on the government services panel.
The inquiry will be led by former High Court justice The Hon Virginia Bell AC SC, who must deliver an interim report by 30 April 2026 and a final report by 14 December 2026. And Sydney silk Richard Lancaster SC has been appointed senior counsel assisting. He’ll prepare and test evidence, line up witnesses and help steer the inquiry’s direction.
G+T will support two senior lawyers from the Australian Government Solicitor, who will act as the solicitors assisting.
The top law firm is no stranger to Commonwealth inquiries. It previously won a $5.8m contract to assist the Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme. Jason Oliver, special counsel at the firm, acted as solicitor assisting that inquiry.
The selection is notable given Attorney-General Michelle Rowland previously worked at the firm before entering politics.
For Gilbert + Tobin, the brief reinforces its track record in high-stakes public law work.
