The Brief:

  • Jones Day adds veteran restructuring partner Nicholas Dunstone to its Sydney office.

  • He joins from Milbank in Singapore, bringing 25+ years across Europe, Asia and Australia.

Jones Day has bolstered its restructuring bench in Sydney, appointing APAC specialist Nicholas Dunstone as a partner.

Dunstone joins from Milbank, where he was a partner in Singapore. Before that, he spent over a decade at asset management firm Asia Research & Capital Management in Hong Kong as Head of Restructuring, helping build the distressed-debt fund’s restructuring platform from the ground up.

He brings 25+ years’ experience advising on complex cross-border restructurings. His recent work includes:

  • Advising bondholders owed $4.2bn in one of Europe’s largest restructurings, totalling $25bn in debt.

  • Repping an Asian oil and gas engineering company through a multi-jurisdictional restructuring involving a multi-billion dollar arbitration claim and a UK Restructuring Plan.

  • Advising the bondholder steering committee in a groundbreaking, highly contested UK restructuring plan that paved the way for its sale.

At Jones Day, he’ll slot into a global team of 100+ restructuring lawyers, advising debtors, creditors and distressed parties across the firm’s international network.

Heather Lennox, who leads Jones Day’s global restructuring practice, said Dunstone’s cross-jurisdictional experience gives him “the ability to see restructurings from every angle.”

He’s the fifth lateral partner to join Jones Day’s Australian practice this year, and the 13th since the firm’s growth push began in mid-2024, according to Chris Lovrien, Aussie Partner-in-Charge.
