The Brief:

  • JWS has appointed Liam Hickey as a partner in its M&A and Private Equity / Venture Capital teams in Melbourne.

  • He joins from Baker McKenzie, with prior time at Weil Gotshal in Boston, bringing rare US-side deal experience.

Johnson Winter Slattery has snapped up Liam Hickey as a partner in its M&A and Private Equity / Venture Capital teams in Melbourne.

Hickey makes the jump from Baker McKenzie.

His bread and butter is advising institutional investors on complex private capital deals. That includes M&A, leveraged buyouts, venture capital and growth equity investments, minority stakes, fund transactions and consortium governance arrangements.

His clients span PE and VC funds, pension and super funds, sovereign wealth funds and global asset managers. And his deal sheet includes:

  • PSG on its $445m acquisition of Protecht Group

  • Norwest on its acquisition of a strategic interest in Poolwerx

  • Macquarie Asset Management on its investment in AirTrunk

Before Bakers, he worked at Weil, Gotshal & Manges in Boston, advising PE firms on buyouts and VC deals. That US pedigree is a big part of the pitch.

Given his time in the US, Liam is well placed to guide US based private equity and venture capital funds on their investments into Australia. His appointment will deepen the strength of our M&A/PE practice, which is known for handling complex inbound transactions, particularly in the tech space.

Managing Partner Jeremy Davis

US capital keeps flowing to Australian assets, and now JWS is well placed to capitalise on that deal flow.
