The Brief:
Automatise has been named Australia’s most innovative professional services firm.
Its litigation platform Cicero AI beat major regional players to take the top prize.
Legal tech startup Automatise has taken out the Professional Services category at the AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies Awards for its AI-driven litigation tool, Cicero.
CEO Joe Rayment called the win “wonderful recognition” for the team and clients who backed the product early. “Our whole approach with Cicero AI is to keep innovating and shaping the service based on client feedback,” he said.
Since launching in 2022, Cicero has signed 15 of Australia’s biggest law firms, including MinterEllison, Maddocks and Holding Redlich. It helps lawyers “find facts faster” by automating document review and due diligence.
Rayment, a former lawyer, built the product after years spent buried in discovery rooms.
We were literally locked in a room going through a million documents with sticky notes

He believes specialising is key to competing with global AI giants like Harvey and Legora. A similar insight was shared with the founders of Deeligence when we sat down with them about AI, the billable hour, and why not every lawyer can be a founder.
