  • Public law expert Katherine Richardson SC has been appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court of NSW.

  • She replaces Justice Robertson Wright, who has served on the bench since 2013.

Katherine Richardson SC is joining the Supreme Court of NSW, bringing more than two decades of public law firepower to the state’s highest court.

Richardson’s practice has centred on administrative and public law, regulatory and disciplinary proceedings, privacy and professional liability. She took silk in 2016 and built a name as a go-to advocate in major public inquiries and coronial inquests of national significance.

She started at Mallesons Stephen Jaques in 1997, studied at Harvard, then took a litigation role at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York. Richardson came home in 2002, the same year she was called to the Bar.

She takes the seat vacated by Justice Robertson Wright, who has been on the bench since 2013.

Attorney-General Michael Daley said:

“Katherine Richardson SC is an outstanding lawyer with a formidable intellect and an exceptional breadth of legal experience. She brings deep expertise in public and administrative law, a strong commitment to the rule of law, and a proven capacity to deal with complex and sensitive matters.”

Richardson will be sworn in on 3 June.
