The Brief:

  • Thomson Geer has hired leading class actions and disputes partner John Emmerig into its Sydney office.

  • The move comes amid a wave of expansion at the firm, including its Ashurst Canberra acquisition.

Thomson Geer has hired John Emmerig as a partner in Sydney, snapping up one of the country’s most experienced class action defence lawyers from Jones Day.

Emmerig brings more than 36 years’ experience. He has a national reputation for handling high-stakes domestic and cross-border disputes, class actions and regulatory matters for major Australian and multinational corporates and Federal and State government agencies.

His track record includes:

  • 40+ class actions

  • 35+ ASIC, ACCC and APRA regulatory matters

  • 20+ Royal Commissions and Parliamentary Inquiries

Before joining Thomson Geer, Emmerig spent more than 13 years at Jones Day as a partner in its global disputes group.

We welcome John to our firm. His experience will bolster the capabilities of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution team and reinforce our commitment to quality service and outcomes for clients

Chief executive partner Adrian Tembel

Emmerig said he was drawn to the firm’s reputation with business and government decision-makers.

The hire comes after a busy 2025 for Thomson Geer, which has already acquired Ashurst’s entire Canberra office and made multiple senior appointments across planning, tax, WHS, banking and finance, and workplace relations.
