The Brief:

  • White & Case rehires debt finance partner Will Stawell in Sydney

  • The move deepens the firm’s debt and financial institutions’ capability in Australia

White & Case has bolstered its Australian finance bench with the return of senior debt finance partner Will Stawell, who rejoins the firm in Sydney from King & Wood Mallesons.

Stawell brings close to 20 years’ experience advising on acquisition and leveraged finance, private capital, syndicated TLBs, debt trades, PIKs, subordinated instruments and restructuring matters. He previously worked at White & Case in New York between 2013 and 2016.

His recent deal work includes advising:

  • Kinetic on more than $3.5bn of strategic financings

  • Stonepeak on acquisition financing for its investment in iOR

  • the lenders to Brookfield on its bid for part of Origin Energy

  • Goldman Sachs on the financing of Madison Dearborn’s acquisition of APM

Global Debt Finance head Eliza McDougall said Stawell’s return strengthens the firm’s integrated global finance offering and supports its continued expansion in the Australian market.

Our ongoing strategy is to build globally to ensure we're best placed to support clients on their key deals and the addition of Will, a leading lawyer in the Australia finance market, clearly aligns with that strategy.

Vice chair Oliver Brettle

The hire aligns with White & Case’s global growth strategy and follows a run of recent Australia appointments, including M&A partners Aaron Kenavan and Jamie Palmer, IP partner Nick Boyle, and Melbourne partner promotions Paul Marshall and Girish Rao.
